The journey of maintaining wellbeing is ongoing, and a recent conversation with a friend about protecting and prioritizing our personal energy has inspired me to write about the importance of setting healthy boundaries. Boundaries are what we decide for ourselves, what is acceptable and what is not, in order to protect our mental health, personal space, and our feelings. These are healthy limits, not restrictions, as they prevent overwhelm, burnout, stress and other uncomfortable states of being. The body and mind are deeply interconnected, and to enjoy a more balanced and fulfilling life, adequate sleep, diet, regular exercise, meditation and mindfulness are as important as setting healthy boundaries. These can be physical, mental, emotional or even digital. Only you and your body know when something or someone is draining your energies or overstepping your personal space.
What others do or do not do is not of your concern. How you feel about them is your choice. Your body lets you know whether it feels ease or unease.
Learning to say no is an important part of self-care when requests are overstepping your limits. Boundaries are not about keeping people out, but about self-respect and creating a safe space for yourself where you can thrive. In a fast-paced world of immense changes, healthy boundaries are essential for maintaining balance and well-being in our personal and professional lives.
